Season 6, Episode 62

We’re finally underway with season 6. After an interesting summer transfer window where we’ve spent less than we’ve actually sold (again), I think I’m at a stage where the squad is progressing very well. We have a relatively young squad with just 3 players in the senior squad who are 30 years or older.

The Premier League is by far and away the biggest spenders of all the leagues in the world. The revenue streams the Premier League creates are unmatched and the gap only appears to be getting wider.

Season 6, Episode 61

An unlikely treble was on the cards last season and we fell quite far from the line. I’m still proud of the squad as all the pressure was certainly not on us. A defence of our league title was always going to be hard and no one expected us to be in the final of the Champions League, but there we were.

Back-to-back FA Cups helped lighten the mood though and we can move into this season with our heads held high.

Summer Transfer Goals

As explained in the previous episode, a new strike partner for Goncalves is of top priority this summer. The likes of Jota, Cutrone and Pellegri have not cut the mustard of late and it’s time to bring in someone who can help link-up play as well as score goals.

Whether we can get a new strike partner for Goncalves will rest on our ability to sell either Jota or Cutrone (or both) for decent money. Get them off the wage bill and bring in some fresh blood.

The rest of the squad I’m pretty happy with and I won’t make too many changes unless something out of the ordinary occurs. We have a couple youngsters already lined up to join us that should help flesh out the under-23’s.

Season 5, Episode 60

It’s been a long season and the boys look emotionally drained. Our form tailed off completely during the last month and a half of the season. We did muster late drama in our Champions League Semi-final 2nd leg against Arsenal, but it was the FA Cup Final against the Gunners where we really showed what we were about.

My quest for more home-grown talent is still ongoing. We have a few young lads coming in already which I’m very excited about. £100m is still left over from this years transfer budget so I’m eager to find out how much of a war chest we have going into next season.

It’s Tottenham who miss out on any sort of European Football next season. Could we attempt to raid their team? Possibly. I will be keeping a close eye on any transfer movements out of Spurs.

With our continuing progress on the field, the board have decided to enlarge our stadium by a whopping 15,426 seats. A huge investment of £55.8m is needed to complete the project and it will take 13 months to complete. We’re going in the right direction but the only down-side (and it’s quite a big one), is that we will now be ground-sharing with Aston Villa at Villa Park. We won’t be stepping inside our own stadium for an entire season. It’s a completely different change of pace and I hope the boys and the supporters can rally together and make it a temporary fortress.

Welcome back to my Football Manager 2020 Wolverhampton Wanderers Story.

Season 5, Episode 59

The final month of our season. We’ve come a long way in such a short time. 5 trophies in my first 5 seasons and we have an opportunity to add three more to that tally in just this month alone.

But I’m under no illusions that this will be tough – very tough! In order for us to successfully defend our league title, we have to rely on Manchester United to drop points. Four points must be dropped in three matches for them considering they have a far superior goal difference than us (United have +64 GD compared to our +38). Honestly, it’s not looking all that rosy.

However, we do have slightly better chances in our other competitions as we face Arsenal in the FA Cup (we beat them last year in the final if you remember) and they will be out for revenge. We also face Arsenal again in the Semi-Final of the Champions League 2nd leg after an away 0-0 draw.

But before all this, we face Brighton in the Premier League.

Welcome back to my Football Manager 2020 Wolverhampton Wanderers Story.

Season 5, Episode 58

Our quest for a successful title defence wages on. Our perfect month of results in March has seen us reach the Quarter Final of the Champions League and the Semi-Final of the FA Cup. Last season we bowed out at the Quarter Final stage of the Champions League to a superb Real Madrid side. I would like to at least go one better this one, but we have the other side of Madrid to face first.

The FA Cup looks like a real prospect for silverware this year with Arsenal being the last major contender in our way. Back-to-back FA Cups hasn’t been done since Arsenal when they won it twice in a row in 2014 & 2015.

We sit a point behind Manchester United in the title race, and we face them next in a tie which could define the league season.

Season 5, Episode 57

I’d like to put our indifferent form behind us and continue with how we played against Schalke. We’re two points behind Chelsea and we cannot afford to continue dropping points in the league.

Diogo Jota continues to be unhappy at the club and with good reason. He hasn’t played much this year and for his career to be stagnating when he’s in his prime, it must be hard. He’s a team leader and it’s not a good look to have one of them be so unhappy at the club.

Chelsea have a tougher month in March as their European campaign continues so the added pressure of that will weigh heavy.

Season 5, Episode 56

We’ve had a busy January month of fixtures and transfers, and we came out the end of it in good shape. It was sad to see Bruno Fernandes leave, but his performances of late were dwindling, and he was coming to the end of his contract. How can I draft up a new contract for a soon-to-be 30 year old that isn’t pulling his weight?

Young Phil Foden has come in to replace him for less money than we received for Bruno and he has all the attributes to fill the void.

Foden will play against his former team in a few days as we face Manchester City on the 6th of February. I have faith he is mature enough to not let the occasion affect him.

Wolves (2nd) vs Tottenham (12th)
3/2/2024 Premier League

Tottenham are having a disaster of a season so far under Fatih Terim. But this is no time to get complacent. They still have quality within the squad and we need to be ready for anything they throw at us.

A case of the flu has spread through the squad a little prior to this match. Neves, van de Beek and Fiezzi all have it and are resting at home.

Season 5, Episode 55

I’m very happy going into the new year. We start 2024 top of the table. By just one point, but it doesn’t matter how many points were ahead, as long as we finish top. That’s the aim.

I suspect a busy window for us as three transfers have already been confirmed. I tend to be a little conservative in the January window, but times are tough with these home-grown restrictions in place and I will jump at a chance to grab any top quality home-grown talent when I can.

Day One Deals

As I said, three transfers have already been confirmed. You know of Christian from Arsenal for £45m. My plan is to slowly ease him into the squad and play as a rotation option with Vinagre. Have we over-paid for him? Possibly, but only time will tell for sure. He’s already a full Brazilian international, so he’s definitely got talent. Be sure to check his attributes over in Episode 54 of Wandering to Titles.

The top of the table is looking very congested but that could all change quite dramatically with the amount of games on offer this month. The winter transfer window is looming and there’s always potential for both ins and outs. Can we make any deals to help further our title defence?

Manchester United (2nd) vs Wolves (4th)
2/12/2023 Premier League

A very tough afternoon ahead of us. Manchester United have strengthened significantly in the summer. Despite selling Martial to Real Madrid, they improved by bringing in Amine Gouiri from Lyon for £70m. He’s taken to life at Old Trafford in his stride and has amassed 10 goals in 16 appearances for them already.

Gouiri has seemingly taken over from fan favourite Rashford as he has only managed three starts this campaign.

We’re again without our first choice wing-backs but we will have to make do.

Season 5, Episode 53

From thrashing Salzburg 7-1 to losing 2-1 to Watford, that was the short tale of our October results. But that’s football. An unpredictable game that keeps us all on our toes.

But we’re looking strong. Above is a selection of all our players that have achieved an average rating of 7.00 or more so far this season. A core contingent of Portuguese players lead the way for us and that’s to no surprise to be honest.

Despite playing well, we are already six points behind Arsenal in the league. I never would have thought this would be the case, considering we smashed them 4-0 in the Community Shield in the first game of the campaign.
