So we have officially kicked off the new season. As mentioned before, we had three games in August – Chelsea, Hull and Liverpool.
While it was a pretty tough start, I felt we were prepared after a successful pre-season. The players were raring to go. Sanchez had already showed me what he could do up top, so it was a matter of proving himself in the games that mattered.
To say I expected this result would be a lie. I was a little nervous going into this game. Chelsea were Champions and there squad is extremely strong. Nevertheless, We had to go into this game with all guns blazing – and boy did we get off to a good start in the Prem!
A 5-1 drubbing! I couldn’t have asked for a better performance. We initially went down to a Diego Costa header, but within 5 minutes we responded with a goal from Ozil. And from there on, it was all us. Chamberlain picked up MOTM with his goal and two assists, playing in his forward winger role. We even saw John Terry receive a 5.7 rating for his role in one of our goals. A good day all round!
We were swiftly brought back down to earth after the Chelsea game. I kept an un-changed side (of course) and we went to attack Hull.
They put 10 men behind the ball at all times in an attempt to frustrate us. It worked. Ryan Mason even received a second yellow card on the 70th minute, but even then we still couldn’t capatalise and put away our chances. 3 clear cut chances and 3 half chances, to their zero. It just wasn’t our day. On to the next one. Let’s not dwell on it.
During the first half of the Liverpool game, we were back in business. We were 2-0 up and we didn’t give Liverpool a sniff of our goal. It was a performance that saw us stick 5 past Chelsea earlier in the month. I was happy.
Mane managed to get one back on the 77th minute, but 6 foot 4 new comer Stefan Bell put the game to bed on the 78th with a header from a corner (or so I thought). Just minutes later, Bell gave away a penalty and Liverpool were back in it.
5 minutes later, we were given a golden opportunity to wrap up the game. Sanchez fouled, and a penalty was given. His confidence was high after his first two goals, so he went for the hattrick, even though he isn’t our designated penalty taker. Mignolet with the heroics and it was all to play for. Up comes Sturridge with an 89th equalizer. I was crushed. Definitely one for the neutrals. It had everything.
Hernia For Xhaka
If our squad wasn’t already injury ravaged enough, I get the news that new boy Xhaka picked up a hernia.
While I have replacements for him with the likes of Elneny and Coquelin, injuries are just not what we need right now.
Champions League Draw
With us sitting in Pot B, I was fearing the worst.
But we ended the month on a high. We scored a favorable group with the likes of Benfica, Olympiakos and Legia. If we fail to get out of this group, we’ll only have ourselves to blame.
Group of Death
I can’t say the same for Spurs though. They got handed an awfully hard group. There’s always one group of death each draw, and Spurs got the short end of the stick this time.
Back For Revenge?
If a 5-1 drubbing wasn’t enough, it seems Chelsea will be back for more. The EFL Cup saw us draw against them, which will happen next month. This time, we’re the away team. This will be a feisty game, that’s for sure.
POTM For Sanchez
Even though Sanchez’s missed penalty ultimately cost us the game against Liverpool, you can’t really knock his performances over the past month. 4 (should be 5) goals in 3 games with a average rating of 8.07 is just what I want from our star man,
How The Table Looks After 3 Games
With only 3 games played, you can’t look too much into things. However the likes of Watford and Bournemouth have started off strong (albeit against the weaker teams of the league) and Chelsea have already picked up two losses (one of course against us, and the other against Man City).
September see’s us play 6 games. We start off the month with the 3 easier fixtures then hit the end of the month against Chelsea, Man United and Benfica.
I’ll be using the games against Legia and Chelsea (League Cup) to rotate my side. So far during my first 3 games, there hasn’t been much rotation, and it will be needed to keep everyone fresh.
